  1. Vietnamese communist politician, member of
  2. the Politburo 1976-81 and from 1985; party
  3. leader from 1986. He began economic
  4. liberalization and troop withdrawal from
  5. Cambodia and Laos. Nguyen, born in North
  6. Vietnam, joined the anti-colonial Thanh Nien,
  7. a forerunner of the current Communist Party
  8. of Vietnam (CPV), in Haiphong 1929. He spent
  9. much of his subsequent party career in the
  10. South as a pragmatic reformer. He was a
  11. member of CPV's Politburo and secretariat
  12. 1976-81, suffered a temporary setback when
  13. party conservatives gained the ascendancy,
  14. and re-entered the Politburo in 1985,
  15. becoming CPV leader in Dec 1986.
